About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Backend Engineer to design, develop and
maintain scalable, secure and resilient backend services for a centralized, cloud-native
application platform.
The platform aims to enable multiple business departments and global teams to build and
operate applications through reusable services and standardized integrations with
enterprise systems, including SAP.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience in Java, Spring Boot,
microservices architecture, distributed systems and event-driven architecture. The role
involves designing reusable backend capabilities, implementing asynchronous
communication patterns, optimizing databases, and ensuring reliable application
deployment and maintenance across multiple geographical regions.
Experience in enterprise application modernization, legacy system migration, platform
engineering or large-scale integration projects will be an added advantage.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop and maintain production-grade backend services using Java 17/21
and Spring Boot.
• Design scalable microservices and RESTful APIs following SOLID principles, objectoriented design and appropriate design patterns.
• Build reusable backend capabilities and common services that can support
multiple business applications and departments.
• Design service-to-service communication using synchronous APIs and
asynchronous, event-driven patterns.
• Develop event-driven applications using Apache Kafka or equivalent eventstreaming platforms.
• Implement reliable event processing, retry mechanisms, idempotency, error
handling and recovery strategies.
• Design and optimize relational database schemas, SQL queries, indexes and
transaction management using PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Apply caching strategies using Redis and work with NoSQL databases and search
platforms where appropriate.
• Contribute to database migration, schema evolution, application modernization
and integration with existing enterprise systems.
• Design applications for high availability, fault tolerance, scalability and resilience.
• Support applications deployed across multiple geographical regions, considering
latency, availability, disaster recovery and data residency.
• Containerize applications using Docker and deploy and operate workloads on
Kubernetes.
• Develop and maintain cloud-native applications on Microsoft Azure.
• Implement authentication, authorization and secure service-to-service
communication using Spring Security, OAuth 2.0 and JWT.
• Build automated testing and CI/CD pipelines using JUnit, Mockito, Maven/Gradle,
Jenkins and/or GitHub Actions.
• Implement centralized logging, monitoring and troubleshooting using ELK or
equivalent observability platforms.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues across application, database, caching,
messaging and infrastructure layers.
• Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews and technical
decision-making.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering standards, maintainability
and long-term platform reliability.
Mandatory Technical Skills
Java Backend Development
• Strong hands-on experience with Java 17 or Java 21.
• Experience with Spring Boot, Spring MVC and Spring Data JPA.
• Strong understanding of REST API design and microservices development.
• Good knowledge of OOP, SOLID principles, design patterns and clean code.
• Understanding of multithreading, concurrency, JVM fundamentals and exception
handling.
• Experience writing unit and integration tests using JUnit and Mockito.
Microservices & Distributed Systems
• Experience designing and developing distributed applications using microservices
architecture.
• Understanding of synchronous versus asynchronous communication and serviceto-service integration.
• Knowledge of distributed transactions, eventual consistency, idempotency, fault
tolerance and resilience.
• Understanding of timeouts, retries, circuit breakers, duplicate requests and partial
system failures.
• Experience building maintainable services that can evolve independently.
Event-Driven Architecture
• Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka or an equivalent event-streaming platform.
• Understanding of producers, consumers, topics, partitions, consumer groups and
offsets.
• Knowledge of event ordering, delivery guarantees, duplicate processing, retries and
dead-letter queues.
• Experience designing asynchronous workflows and handling failures in event-driven
systems.
Databases & Data Migration
• Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.
• Strong SQL skills, indexing, query execution plans and database performance
optimization.
• Understanding of transactions, locking, isolation levels and data consistency.
• Working knowledge of Redis and exposure to NoSQL databases.
• Understanding of database migration strategies, schema evolution and backward
compatibility.
Cloud, Containers & DevOps
• Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience developing or operating applications on Microsoft Azure.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Git, Maven, and/or Gradle.
• Experience with centralized logging, application monitoring, and production
troubleshooting.
Security
• Experience with Spring Security and secure REST API development.
• Understanding of OAuth 2.0, JWT, authentication and authorization.
• Knowledge of API security and secure service-to-service communication.
Good-to-Have Skills
• Experience in enterprise application modernization or legacy system migration.
• Experience integrating applications with SAP or other enterprise platforms.
• Experience with multi-region or globally distributed application deployments.
• Exposure to Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.
• Experience with observability tools such as ELK, Prometheus, Grafana or
OpenTelemetry.
• Working knowledge of Go or another backend programming language.
• Basic familiarity with React, Angular or Vue for understanding end-to-end
application integration.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on backend engineer who can independently design and
develop reliable services, understand distributed-system trade-offs, troubleshoot
production issues, and contribute to architecture decisions. The candidate should be
comfortable building reusable platform capabilities rather than developing isolated
applications alone.
